Recently, China Southern Airlines announced cooperation with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to pilot the IATA Travel Pass, a mobile APP that will help people travel at ease while meeting any government requirements for COVID-19 tests or vaccines.
With the IATA Travel Pass, travelers can easily find authentic travel, testing, and vaccine requirements for their journeys. It can also identify testing centers and labs at departure locations that meet the standards for testing and vaccination requirements of the destination and locate authorized labs and test centers to share test and vaccination certificates securely.
It will function as a kind of ‘digital passport,' receiving test and vaccination certificates and verifying that they are sufficient for their itinerary, as well as sharing testing or vaccination certificates with airlines and authorities to facilitate travel. It can effectively avoid passengers forging paper nucleic acid reports and vaccination certificates.
Airlines and border authorities can benefit, too. With the app, it will take less time for them to verify whether a passenger meets the requirements for travel, and thus travelers, and especially international travelers, can reduce their waiting time at the airport.
At present, over 70 airliners have started or committed to start trials with the app, including Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirate Airlines, British Airways, etc. China Southern Airlines is the first airline in the Chinese mainland to pilot the app.
